BCI EVENTS
Brisbane Creative Industries June
One of our favourite events in Sydney, Creative Sydney, was on as part of the Vivid Festival of sound, light and (awesome) ideas! Check out some of our liveblogged posts of the event in the June issue of Brisbane Creative Industries.
The Australia Council for the Arts Marketing Summit 2010 is on in the next couple of days so we figured that we better send this Enews now before the Summit starts! Check out some of the livetweets via the #msummit2010 hashtag. We have also published a couple of liveblogged entries of the Summit which you can now read in the blog!
A couple of big events are hitting the streets, corners, alleyways and various other public spaces in Brisbane (literally!). Make sure that you check out Fete de la Musique and Inhabit Fiesta.
Have a good one!

Fundbreak // Crowdfunding Creative Projects and Ideas
Fundbreak provides project creators with a platform to present their ideas to a worldwide audience. If anyone likes the idea, they can support it by pledging money to the creator's project. In return for support, the project creators will offer rewards depending on the level of funding.
Anyone in Australia, who cannot obtain funding for their ideas, now has Fundbreak to find a worldwide network of support sources.
Fundbreak believes in an all or 'nothing' concept. If the project reaches the funding goal within the time frame, production begins and supporters receive their rewards. If the goal is not reached in time, the project will be deemed unsuccessful and no funds will be exchanged.
More information about Fundbreak on BCI.

Calling All Queensland Film Makers!
The Gold Coast Film Festival ("GCFF") Queensland Showcase program is back again in 2010 and is currently calling for submissions following last year's amazing success. "Last year the Queensland films we screened in the film festival were all extremely well supported, with 1 session completely selling out. It's great to see such support for our emerging talent." Casey Marshall Siemer, GCFF10, Festival Director.
I AM LOVE // BCI Giveaway
I AM LOVE tells the story of the wealthy Recchi family, whose lives are undergoing sweeping changes. Eduardo Sr., the family patriarch, has decided to name a successor to the reigns of his massive industrial company, surprising everyone by splitting power between his son Tancredi, and grandson Edo. But Edo dreams of opening a restaurant with his friend Antonio, a handsome and talented chef. At the heart of the family is Tancredi's wife Emma (Tilda Swinton), a Russian immigrant who has adopted the culture of Milan. An adoring and attentive mother, her existence is shocked to the core when she falls quickly and deeply in love with Edo's friend and partner Antonio, and embarks on a passionate love affair that will change her family forever.
This promo is now closed but go here for more information about the movie.

Pecha Kucha Brisbane // {More Ideas} {Inspiration}
Pecha Kucha Brisbane, as usual a favourite, included a variety of creative talent to check out in Brisbane - from furniture designers to opera singers! This was also an extra special event with the founder of Pecha Kucha, Mark Dytham, joining us to talk about this special series of events that have taken over the world. Here are a few of our favourites...
Hannah Cutts of Cutts Creative // {Design} {Education}
Billy Blue College of Design, as part of the professional development programme that they have for their students, hosts industry nights inviting speakers, students and other guests to the college to talk about the industry and to provide tips and advice for an audience of mainly emerging practitioners. I attended the Brisbane opening of the college at the start of this year and this is their second industry night inviting Hannah Cutts of Cutts Creative to present.
Artworkers Alliance Artworkers Networker // {Event}
This was a very long overdue write-up from an April 2010 event that I was invited to present by Artworkers Alliance which is a BCI favourite in terms of events organisers as they consistently hold professional development events in conjunction with the QUT Museum. The event in question was Artworkers’ first ever Networker session of the years with speakers including AASS (Accidentally Annie Street Space
, Vegas Spray, The Wandering Room and me). I usually don’t feel compelled to write about events where I am presenting (this excludes pre-event entries) mainly because I feel really silly writing about an event that I was presenting at but I have made a few pages of notes which
need to see the light of day!
where the heart is // Expressions Dance Company
where the heart is by Expressions Dance Company is Natalie Weir’s first full length premiere as Artistic Director of the company and also signals the start of a year creative programming, collaborations and partnerships across some of Brisbane’s major venues including QPAC and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art.
thought imbued // {empty spaces into creative spaces}
SCCEDA developed the “Creative Outlets” concept which is supported by Brisbane City Council via the Lord Mayor’s Creative City Initiative (we briefly blogged about a grant that they offered). thought imbued is an exhibition that was part of this concept.
Creative Sydney 2010’s Creative Futures Wrap Up

I flew to Sydney to check out Creative Sydney and Vivid Sydney and ended up live blogging all sessions from the June 5 2010 Creative Futures event!
Creative Sydney Session 5 // Networks and Clusters
Creative Sydney Session 4 // Creation and Curation
Creative Sydney Session 3 // Crowds and Collaboration with Ross Dawson
Creative Sydney Session 3 // Crowds and Collaboration with The Loop
Creative Sydney Session 2 // Agents and Managers with Matt Jackson
Creative Sydney Session 2 // Agents and Managers with Dom Thurbon
Creative Sydney Session 1 // Collaborative Consumption
Creative Sydney Session 1 // Thomas McSweeney publisher
Creative Sydney Session 1 // Futuretainment
The responses (ie retweets) have been fantastic as well! It’s unfortunate that I can only be in Sydney for one day so I certainly look forward to seeing the Twitter discussion and any blog entries that come up from this. The event is called “Creative Sydney” but what was discussed is obviously accessible and relevant to other cities. A brief wrap-up can be found here.
iPad Applications For Professional Creatives and Artists
With Apple's new baby finally available on Australian shelves, one of the biggest obstacles for many is the notion that the iPad is just an expensive toy. This is a fair assumption. It is, after all, a completely new market - introducing a consumer need rather than fulfilling one - and the most practical uses for it have yet to be invented.
It's easy to look past this, however, when you consider the potential for the iPad as a professional artistic tool: a medium for media creation rather than consumption. In most cases, it doesn't serve as a replacement to existing technology, but as a helpful addition to an illustrator, musician, writer or designer's arsenal.
XMediaLab // Global Media Ideas
Who should attend? All media and creative industries professionals and entrepreneurs! More info about the event here.
Stelarc // {Suspension} {Tech} {AI}
I first heard of a strange, strange man named Stelarc
as a bored high school student, browsing astonishingly dull reference material for an essay entitled "What is Art?" Reading and viewing his work spectacularly shattered that monotony. Art, I learned, was not just paint on canvas. Art could also equal extreme pain, expensive technology and experimental surgery. Here was a man who took that interpretation of art seriously enough to graft an internet-enabled human ear into his own arm; who willingly suspend himself naked from flesh hooks. Whether a genius, a lunatic or a calculated combination of both, he made textbook research in the '90s a hell of a lot more fun. I owe him my sanity for his apparent lack thereof.
ARTspan 2010 // Visual Art Lectures for students, artists and art lovers
I attended both lecture series at the two different locations: Whitebrooke Theatre, Southern Cross University on Friday and Byron Bay Cultural and Community Centre on Saturday. Russell Storer, Curator, Contemporary Asian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery and Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, exhibiting artists in the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (5 December 2009 to 5 April 2010) were key speakers.
Ron Mueck at the Gallery of Modern Art // {Sculpture} {Awesome}
If you've spent any time near South Bank lately, you're probably already familiar with the advertising campaign for Ron Mueck's sculpture exhibition. That disembodied head; those two glaring elderly ladies; the chubby naked woman carrying sticks. By now, these are familiar images to many. Unfortunately, the advertisements make a key oversight (and a surprisingly common one when it comes to promotion of Mueck's work) by omitting the biggest selling point of the sculptures: their scale.
Online Reputation Matters
Nowadays information and slander can derail a strategy, campaign or even business in milliseconds via various online channels as opposed to the weeks and months they used to a couple of years ago. Now more then ever, it's important to monitor and put in place various strategies to proactively and effectively represent your business or your client's business online. Read more here.
Resetting the Agenda // {Talks} {Knowledge}
On arrival, Paul Bishop from Arts Evolution welcomed one and all to the second day of Resetting the Agenda – an initiative supporting arts, art workers, and purveyors of creativity in so many fields and tangents: actually anyone who put their hand up for this informative and multi-faceted day of discussions.
