BCI EVENTS

Brisbane Creative Industries April

Wow, what an issue.  This is definitely the biggest Enews that we have for Brisbane Creative Industries and it is all thanks to the changemakers, creatives and enthusiasts out there who are continuously organising events, setting up new projects and initiatives, and generally doing what we love to do every day.

The articles, writeups, reviews and profiles are varied to cater for the vast contributions that individuals, businesses and organisations bring to the creative industries in Brisbane.  We are talking; fashion, publishing, writing, artist run initaitives, film, design, entertainment businesses, photography, productions, architecture, gaming, music and more.

For those who are either following us on Twitter or Facebook, you may notice that there are a lot of guest writers involved (see left-hand column of this Enews as to who they are).  Thanks to the Brisbane City Council Creative City microgrant, we have been able to expand the contributors and with great success too! I look forward to working with the writers in future issues to come.

Have a great April!  We'll see you again in our next Enews issue.

An Audience with Syd Mead // {Film} {Concept Design}

At 76, Mead continues to imagine the future for a living as an industrial designer. His paintings of hypothetical vehicles, machinery, landscapes and buildings have made him a highly-sought-after concept artist for decades. While perhaps best known for his work on the films Blade Runner, Aliens and Tron, he has been similarly influential in the motoring, advertising, toy and architecture industries.

Adrian Mezzina of The Arcade Creative // {Entertainment}

I had a chat with Adrian Mezzina, Director of The Arcade Creative. Adrian is a new-age strategic marketing & promotions specialist. As a person who thrives on a challenge, Adrian has proven himself to grow businesses to their fullest potential in each role he has filled.

Queensland Festival of Photography // {Highlight} {Exhibitions}

This celebration of photo-media is the biggest in Australia and is evidence of Queensland's wealth of artistic and curatorial talent and dedication to pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium.

Let the Sunshine // {QTC} {Play Briefing}

Let the Sunshine is a co-production between the Queensland Theatre Company and the Melbourne Theatre Company with talent from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne as a way to collaborate with artists from interstate and as a way to determine resources to achieve certain outcomes. Apparently, this is a first with the Melbourne Theatre Company!

Show Pony // {Plug n Play} {The Edge} {Catalysts}

The Edge in South Bank is shaping up to be a very interesting place to spend a Saturday afternoon. This is thanks in large part to the Catalyst program, which hires local technology-centred artists (branded "Catalysts" as they "make interesting things happen") as mentors to direct the venue's various events and workshops such as Plug n Play.

Peter Madden // {Come Together} {Talk} {IMA}

I was a bit unprepared for this but Peter Madden, a New Zealand artist currently exhibiting at the Institute of Modern Art until 29 May 2010, has a fair bit in common with the previous BCI entries and that was architecture. More on that later.

Phai-Ra // {Qld Festival of Photography} {QCA}

Phai-Ra is an exhibition that celebrates a diversity of ideas in photo-media. Six emerging Queensland artists, recent graduates from QCA, have been brought together by their passion for expressing ideas inexpressible in words alone. Each of these female artists has a strong and unique visual style that sets them apart in the photo-media world.

Myrtle St Studio Opening // {ARI} {Studio}

On Friday I was fortunate enough to find myself at the private opening of the Myrtle St Studio. The Myrtle St Studio is a charming new gallery, specialist book store and studio space situated in a quiet but easily accessible residential area in the Grange.

Pecha Kucha Brisbane // {Ideas} {Inspiration}

Pecha Kucha Brisbane has an excellent vibe – I went by myself and while I saw a few familiar faces, by the end of the night I was enjoying the presentations with a group of people that I have only met an hour ago. I don’t know how many of the attendees are new and old but it doesn’t really matter for this event.

White Noise // {Music} {Musicadium} {Showcase}

Musicadium's White Noise workshop takes that nurturing attitude a step further. The three-day course placed selected emerging musicians under the guidance of industry experts, and made full use of the venue's recording studios, editing labs and rehearsal spaces. Talks spanned songwriting, recording, distribution, management, legal issues, and marketing.

Brisbane Comedy Festival // {Random} {Laughs}

The Brisbane Comedy Festival ran in the Brisbane Powerhouse and finished in March 21. For the first time in this festival, they utilised the Rooftop Terrace which allowed a place for a greater variety of artists to be programmed in the festival. I have a chance to check out local, national and interstate acts.

Virtual Fashion Connect will take place over a series of days at the White Canvas, 26 Church St, Fortitude Valley and will also include professional development events including a panel on how to be successful online and a VIP fashion forum.

Excellence in Architecture // {Awards} {Australian Institute of Architects}

Each time I hear an architecture speak at an event or their works honored at an event, I have the opportunity to appreciate this practice more and more. Architecture, and for this entry the"Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards" as hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects , is...about using the theory and mechanisms learned from education and past experiences to solve many complex problems, encapsulate the needs of various stakeholders and also have the creative and environmental stamina to create something not only beautiful but also environmentally sustainable.

The Mana Bar // {Games} {Launch} {Venues}

The Mana Bar officially opened to the public at midday today and with a lot of buzz around this venue, Facebook photos tantalising us as to what this bar could look like and the occasional conversations with Australian Gamer's Guy "Yug" Blomberg about the bar, I was excited to finally check it out the previous night.

The Alliance Française French Film Festival

The red carpet at the Palace Centro could barely be seen through the crowd of people. The line extended beyond the footpath all the way to the James st pedestrian crossing, to confuse passing drivers. I was excited, it was my first film festival, there was an air of glamour that was almost edible.

A Refined Approached // {Fashion} {Refinery29} {Portable}

Working in a digital agency I'm continually exposed to a vast scape of online opportunity for both my individual and client's ideas. I'm always intrigued to hear lessons and insights of people that have made a significant impact to their industry online,Refinery29's presentation didn't disappoint.

Staged Lives // {Theatre} {Playlab} {State of Writing}

I eagerly awaited for a chance to attend Staged Lives - the much anticipated and sold out event presented by the State Library of Queensland, Queensland Theatre Company and Playlab. It was only the afternoon before the event were a few spots opened up for last minute registrations which I gratefully took!

Dealing with Galleries // {Writeup} {Artworkers Alliance}

For a graduate with artistic aspirations, the transition from sheltered student to professional artist is a daunting and frankly terrifying one. Support organisation Artworkers knows this all too well, and has launched a series of free public forums entitled Life After Uni to help newcomers take that step.

TEDxBrisbane // {Ideas} {Writeup}

TEDxBrisbane is all about ideas that are worth spreading.

Oh you’re so Vein! // {Launch} {Shoes} {Retail}

You could be forgiven for thinking you’d walked on to the set of a 1920s art-deco inspired movie. The air was fraught with anticipation; the standing lights on each side of the hallway cast a warm golden glow over the rich interior of the heritage-listed Brisbane Arcade….Welcome to the Vein Wear Cocktail Party. Also known as the launch of the second Vein Wear shoes store in Brisbane.
